Questions to Ask

1.  What is Androgenic Alopecia or Male Pattern Baldness?
The most common cause of hair loss in men is "androgenic alopecia".  genetics and  hormones play a significant role specifically dihydrotestosterone (DHT).
The hair in the front and top of the scalp have been "genetically programmed" to lose blood supply under the influence of a DHT at a specific time in a patient's life, at that point  the hair becomes finer and eventually is completely lost.

2What are the different treatment options available?
Medical treatments, such as Propecia, are the first line of defense for androgenic alopecia. It delays the hair loss, and keeps them stronger for a certain length of time. Surgical options are the next step, and most likely the best options in terms of effectiveness, and natural look.

3.  What is the limitation to hair transplantations?
Hair transplant techniques have improved over the years to the point that you should not be able to tell who has or who has not had a hair transplant. However, the main limitation is that every balding person only has a fixed amount of donor hair available  for transplantation. As a hair transplant surgeon, my primary focus is 1) to ensure the highest percent of grafts survive and grow and 2) to use the hair bank carefully to ensure the hair transplant will be effective even in the older years of patients life.. Every step of the hair transplant process should be subjected to the question, "Is this the best strategy for the long term management of hair loss in any particular patient?"

4.  How much density can I get from transplanted hair?
With respect to the balding area, 50% density is the most you will be able to get, since transplanting more density is not practical, and may be waste of donor hair, which may be useful at a future time.
And again there are many patients that do not have enough hair to cover all the bald areas. In these situations careful planning is even more important, e.g., giving more density in the frontal region than in the crown area.

5.  What is new in how you perform hair transplants today?
There are two recent innovations that have revolutionized hair transplants.
The first is performing the hair transplant using each individual natural grouping of hair as a unit, known as "follicular units" or "follicular hair transplant", and the second is the use of the stereoscopic microscope to dissect out the hair to be transplanted. This ensures the vitality of dissected hair.

6.  What is meant by "follicular units" ?
Hair units or "follicular units" are naturally occurring groups of hair, in combination of 2, 3, or 4 and sometimes one hair in one a follicle. It makes sense to keep them in that natural form, attempts at dissecting the units may destroy the follicle. In other words keeping the follicular units increases the likelihood of their survival and a better result.

7.  At what stage of hair loss should I consider hair transplant?

There is no magic moment to consider hair transplant. It can be performed at any stage. Sometimes it may even prevent the completely bald look by starting earlier before significant hair loss has occurred. Once the hair loss is established of course it is your decision to correct it as soon as you would like to do so.

8.  How many sessions of hair transplants will I require to achieve the density I desire?

In general 2 to 3 sessions are required in most patients. Of course it depends upon the density of existing hair, the desire of the patient, and availability of donor site. Some patients may be satisfied even with one session, and others may ask for multiple session to acquire the look and density they want.

9.  What about "Scalp Reductions" and "Flaps"?

Scalp reduction still plays some role in the treatment of hair loss. It has its own advantages and disadvantages. It is expeditious, and saves plenty of donor hair for future use. the main limitation is the resulting scar. If a patient has sufficient donor hair to give at least 50% density in the bald area with transplantation, then scalp reduction may not be necessary.

10.  What is "LASER" hair transplants?

Laser is essentially used to create the space for hair to be transplanted in. The supposed advantage is that it minimizes bleeding, but
down side of the laser is that it can damage the scalp, causing a delay in hair growth, or potentially no growth, and thus decreased survival of the transplanted hair. So laser does not offer any substantial benefit to warrant its use for hair transplantation.

11.  What are "mega-session" hair transplants?

Some hair transplant surgeons have attempted to perform large number of grafts in one session, trying to expedite the hair transplant process. In my opinion a big session should be about 750 to 800 grafts, and should not exceed 1000 grafts. Long sessions are tiring for the patient and the staff, and the results from different reports suggest that graft survival is not as good in mega sessions.

12.  What about repair work of bad hair transplants?

With the improved techniques in hair transplantation, the previous methods can also be improved now. I have corrected a large number of " old or plug" method hair transplants with a variety of methods, including refinement  with micro and mini grafts, removal of old plugs and sometimes replacement of the removed "plugs" with further dissection.

13.  What are important qualities for a good hair transplant surgeon to possess?

Proper training, natural artistic inclination and experience are of course necessary. A good surgeon should always plan for the future needs of the patient and not look for immediate gains for himself in terms of unnecessary sessions.

14.  Is hair transplant procedure painful?

With proper use of sedation and local anesthetics, a hair transplant procedure is much less painful than anticipated. Most of our patients do not feel much discomfort.

15. How much does a hair transplant cost?

Prices vary depending on the extent of the hair transplant, the number of hair transplants, the site of the hair transplant, and if it is corrective hair transplant. Our minimum price is Dh 9,000 and the average price is between Dh 12,000 - 15,000. We accept checks, credit cards, and have a payment plan.
